Jack Leigh

Jack Leigh (1948-2004) was an award-winning portrait and documentary photographer from Savannah, Georgia. After receiving his degree from the University of Georgia, he traveled internationally but found his photographic inspiration in the Low Country when he returned to Savannah. His goal was to document the people and environments of “the South.”

Working exclusively with black and white film, he was able to capture the ordinary in a way that conveyed the mood and charm of the people, marshes, fishing villages, and roadside businesses of his local area. His work has appeared in museums and gallery exhibitions, graced book covers, appeared in publications, and entered numerous collections. In addition, he published six renowned books of photography-- Oystering: A Way of Life (1983), Nets & Doors: Shrimping In Southern Waters (1989), Seaport: A Waterfront At Work (1996), The Land I’m Bound To (2000), The Ogeechee: A River and Its People (2004), and Ossabaw: Evocations of an Island (2004).
